Guide to a Sustainable Summer

Sunday, June 20, 2021 marks the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere! With the world around us seeming to return to normal, it is easy to get excited about the upcoming season. But while you’re planning your next beach day or your next camping trip, there are a few things that you can pack with you to take care of Earth on your way. Below is a list of some sustainable products to keep in mind while preparing for summer activities!

Insulated Reusable Water Bottle

A sustainability staple, this will keep your ice from melting when you go to hydrate during a hot day outside. This can be filled before your big day out, keeping you from purchasing plastic water bottles along your way. Here is an example of a sustainable 20 oz insulated water bottle, available in a variety of fresh summer colors

Bottle Sling

Another option when thinking about water bottles for the summer is a bottle sling. If you are planning on going on a hike, this will help you carry your water hands-free. It is made from 50% recycled materials and can be returned to the seller at the end of its life to be recycled into something new

Hat

If you are in the market for a new hat this summer, you may consider looking at some more sustainable options. For example, this hat is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. In addition, the proceeds from this hat fund the removal of one pound of trash from oceans and coastlines

Sunglasses

If you’re looking for a new pair of sunglasses, there are many sustainable options now available. For example, this polarized pair is made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate and recycled silicone. In addition, this pair comes with a recycled polyvinyl chloride case and a recycled nylon pouch to carry them in. There are a variety of patterns and colors to choose from as well

Sea-safe Sunblock

Regardless of your plans this summer, it is important to remember to protect your skin in the process. This sunscreen is SPF 30 and biodegradable. In addition, it is tested for the safety of fish and coral, making it safe for the sea and for the reef systems it may run off into

Natural Bug Repellent

Whether hiking or camping, or just outside on a warm summer night, you may find yourself in need of some bug repellent. This option is all-natural, non-toxic and cruelty-free. It contains no chemicals, synthetics, fragrances, parabens, GMOs, BPA or phthalate. When the bottle is empty, it can even be sent back to the seller to be thoroughly recycled

Clean-Up Kit

A product good for hiking, camping or going to the beach, this clean-up kit contains a tote bag and a pair of gloves for you to use as you see trash along your way. This is a great set to remind you to do your part wherever you can, helping the environment on the go. In addition, the proceeds from this kit fund the removal of one pound of trash from oceans and coastlines

Each of these items are personal recommendations to keep in mind while we get into summer. Specifically, I love to support the companies linked, as EarthHero is dedicated to cleaner production lines, lower carbon footprints, higher quality, and less waste, and 4Ocean is dedicated to removing trash from oceans and coastlines. As many of us spend more and more time outside, it is a great opportunity to show appreciation for the natural world by taking care of it. Whether spending time this summer on a hike through the woods or taking a dip at the beach, the small choices we make everyday can help protect these environments.
